Scargo’s Cape Cod Adventures by Dr Valarie Whiting

The story comes from Wampanoag oral tradition. Princess Scargo was the daughter of a Native American chief. One version says a young brave gave her four fish as a gift before he left for a journey. She wanted to keep them alive, so her father and the villagers dug out a lake to hold them—today called Scargo Lake, in Dennis, Massachusetts. The lake was filled with rainwater or diverted from another water source. When the brave returned, the fish had grown and thrived, and he was impressed by her dedication. The story is associated with themes of love, patience, resourcefulness, and the connection between people and nature. The shape of the lake and nearby Scargo Tower are said to resemble parts of the story.
